Starting with the 11th century stone statues guarding the entrance,
the hotel is a depository of priceless sculpture, furniture, table
settings, turn-of-the-century charcoal paintings, temple braziers
and other vintage religious accoutre-ments. Tugu is a showcase of
Indonesian cultures and influences – from Chinese peranakan
to Dutch colonial, from the Golden Age of the Majapahit to the rich
Islamic era.
Tugu’s dining rooms, filled with museum quality artefacts,
are in a class of their own. The Sutra Room is completely enveloped
by a Chinese temple dating from 1706. With its original collection
of antiques and period paintings, the room imparts the look and feel
of mandarin China. This Kang Xi family temple from Surabaya in East
Java is the perfect backdrop for the elaborate Chinese-Javanese Babah
dinners presented in the imperial court manner or more earthy family
style.
The Bale Puputan, across a walkway over fishponds, befits a dinner
served in the grand colonial-style. The marbletop table used in the
Dutch governor’s residence in Surabaya 150 years ago now accommodates
guests attending a ceremonial rijsttafel.
Dinner at Tugu is as much a cultural event as it is a fine dining
experience. Decorating the walls behind the diners are historical
objet d-art salvaged from Denpasar’s raja’s palace razed
by the Dutch in 1905.

treatments that have been used for generations in Java’s royal
courts.
The Gallery, beyond Bale Puputan, is filled with meticulously
annotated antiques, paintings, old photographs and heirlooms from
the centuries of the Chinese peranakan presence in Indonesia. The
adjoining library offers vital services such as fax and 24-hour internet,
music and movie videos for the enjoyment of guests, as well as special
book collections on Balinese art and architecture.
The intimate dining rooms that also serve as meeting rooms, the
gracious public spaces, the Balinese-style architecture, the tete-a-tete
pavilions, the lotus ponds and other water features, together with
the lush grounds all conspire to make Hotel Tugu Bali an inspiring
and innovative venue for small incentive groups, workshops and seminars.
